You’ve just gotten married or had your picture taken, and you know you want to plaster these photos all over your house. But…you don’t actually know how to set them up…. Decorating your walls with photos isn’t as easy at it sounded.
Well I’ve got some tips and tricks for you that are gonna make it a breeze!
Put Your Main Photo at Eye Level
If you’re just hanging one photo, stick the center of it right at eye level. If you’re making a photo display, or hanging multiple photos, make sure the display is centered around eye level.
The most common mistake I see people making when decorating their walls with photos is by hanging them way too high up! You want your guests (and yourself) to walk into a room and have their eye naturally be drawn to the photos in front of them. Don’t stress about making this height perfect, just make sure you’re not grabbing a step ladder just to hang your wall art.
If you’re making a multi-photo collage, there are two photos you want to make sure your display has
1) A photo of you and your spouse standing and smiling at the camera.
Very traditional. Very classic. Subconsciously, everyone is drawn to direct eye contact. Everyone wants to feel that human connection that comes from looking someone right in the face. You want to give people the opportunity to connect with you that way by including at least one photo of you two just standing there, smiling at the camera.
2) Close up detail shots.
Everyone is naturally drawn to photos of themselves, so it’s easy for detail shots to slip your mind. I encourage you not to underestimate them though! Adding detail shots into your wall art is a great way to give some variety to your photos. Without detail shots, you run the risk of your display looking too crowded or overwhelming.
A great way to make sure you get enough variety and tons of frameable photos is by having a first look session before your wedding. Most of the canvases in our house are from our first look!
Mix and Match- Variety is the name of the game
On the same note, make sure you’re including a good variety of pulled back shots, medium shots, close ups, and detail shots. Pulled back shots show a lot of the landscape and you can see your entire bodies from head to toe. Medium shots show a part of your body- usually from the waist up. Close up and detail shots showcase smaller, more intimate details.
If you make sure you’re display has a good mix of these different shots, you’ll add interest and keep it from looking too repetitive. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “the photos tell a story”. How you make your photos tell a story is by including all these different elements!
